Behind the Seams at Mini Metropolis SG

If you are reading this, chances are you share our obsession.
We are the founders of Mini Metropolis, a pair of long-time buddies based right here in Singapore. For a big part of our lives we’ve proudly identified as #manybaggers — chasing after high-quality backpacks, slings, and messengers.
But eventually, we thought: What if we just made our own? We envisioned bags that were stylish, reliable, and tailored for everyday city life. Most importantly, we wanted to prove that quality didn't have to come with an exorbitant price tag. This is the story of how a lean startup team spent nearly three years turning that "what if" into reality.
A Balancing Act Between Looks, Durability and Cost
When hunting for cheap backpacks Singapore, the results are usually disappointing. You often have to look at 3 things - Aesthetics, durability and price, and choose just 2.
Our mission was clear: engineer EDC Backpacks (Everyday Carry) that balances between these 3 things. They should be effortlessly stylish for the urban commute, tough enough for daily wear and tear, while remaining genuinely wallet-friendly. To achieve this, we had to optimize costs at every single step of the journey.
Three Years in the Making
This optimization meant making tough, strategic decisions across the board — from selecting and finalizing our designs and sourcing suppliers, to utilizing AI for our marketing materials, and carefully mapping out how best to sell our products to you. It was a steep learning curve, and the process took almost three years before we were finally ready to open our digital doors.
Beyond Simply Rebranding a Generic Bag
Designing a bag from absolute scratch through a fancy design firm comes with a massive price tag — a cost that inevitably gets passed down to the customer. As a lean startup, we knew there was a smarter way to deliver a value-for-money product without compromising on our high standards.
Instead of reinventing the wheel, we looked at the vast array of existing generic designs available in the Chinese manufacturing market. We meticulously sifted through numerous options to find the core silhouettes that best captured the sleek, functional aesthetics of modern city life.
Many brands take these off-the-shelf designs, slap their logo on the front, and call it a day. We didn't want to do that. We used these base designs merely as our starting canvas. From there, we heavily customized the blueprints, refined the functional details, and upgraded the materials used. We transformed standard templates into high quality gear.
Bootstrapping in China & 4 Iterations Later
Finding the right manufacturing partner was our next major hurdle. Like many modern brands, we started by sourcing and contacting factories online. However, we quickly realized that emails and video calls weren't enough. Our required level of customization demanded a hands-on approach.
We packed our bags and made multiple trips to China. We wanted to walk the factory floors, personally learn about the manufacturing process, and hand-select the fabrics and hardware. Working face-to-face with our partner factories allowed us to dial in the exact quality we demanded.
Did you know?
- We had to reject the work of 5 factories before settling on the current ones.
- Every single model currently available in the Mini Metropolis store has gone through at least four prototype iterations before earning our final stamp of approval.
- To ensure quality control, our founders spent 3 days in a Chinese factory hand-checking every single bag before they are shipped to Singapore.
Small Batches & Continuous Evolution
Unlike big brands that mass-produce their gear in the thousands, we manufacture our bags in small, carefully managed batches. Producing in smaller quantities allows us to treat our designs as living projects. With every new batch, we are able to introduce small Quality of Life (QOL) improvements and subtle style variations and new colorways that cater to different tastes. Most importantly, this agile approach means we are open to customer feedback. If a zipper pull could be more ergonomic or a laptop sleeve needs just a fraction more padding, we want to know. Your real-world experiences with our bags will shape and refine our future runs.
Building Mini Metropolis wasn’t easy. It required countless late nights, frequent flights, and endless in-person sourcing of material swatches. But seeing the final products, bags that we are proud to carry every single day, makes it all worth it.
We are thrilled to finally share these bags with you. Welcome to the Mini Metropolis
